The Art of Iky: A Narrative-Based Design House Redefining Cultural Preservation

“The Art Of Iky” is far more than a traditional fashion brand; it is a narrative-based design house and a comprehensive way of life. Founded by Michael Gaobakwe affectionately known it his peers as “Mikey”, from whom the name “Iky” derives, the brand operates on the philosophy of documenting and preserving culture through a unique, highly personal lens. At its core, the brand is dedicated to making objects feel discovered rather than merely designed, rejecting polished, generic aesthetics in favor of mystery, intelligence, and cultural texture.

The foundation of the brand is built upon six distinct principles:

1.      Anti-Generic – Every piece must possess an identifiable “human fingerprint” and soul, proving that somewhere, rather than just something

2.      Beautiful Tension – This principle relies on duality, fusing contrasting elements so they live in harmony. Examples include blending luxury with roughness, the ancient with the futuristic, and the elegant with the “slightly fucked up”.

3.      The Hidden Detail -  The brand deliberately avoids explaining everything, embedding subtle secrets into its typography, composition, or texture, which serves as a reward for the observant consumer.

4.      Cultural Intelligence – Defined as capturing cultural essence without resorting to “cultural costume”. Rather than simply slapping traditional African symbols onto a garment, it involves a deep understanding of rhythm, proportion, and materiality to translate human behavior into contemporary forms. During the interview, this was coined as “Anthropology chic”.

5.      Imperfection as Evidence of Authorship - Embracing a “wabi-sabi” approach, the brand utilizes awkward crops, strange letterforms, and unexpected textures to ensure products feel made rather than manufactured. Consequently, The Art of Iky doesn’t carry traditional inventory; everything is bespoke and made to order, meaning no two pieces are exactly identical.

6.      Create Intrigue – Rather than chasing attention, the brand positions itself as a “best-kept secret twist”. The goal is to prompt the right audience to ask, “How did the fish find these?” – a metaphor for humanity uncovering rare, monumental artifacts in a vast world.

Despite its profound depth, the visual identity of The Art of Iky is highly minimalist, featuring stark black and white logos and simple typography. The minimal approach draws heavy inspiration from Japanese culture, particularly its deep respect for product care and preservation. Mikey describes the brand’s energy as “Ichiban” – a Japanese term meaning “number one”. He connects this to his roots in Botswana, noting how the country is the brightest spot on the geographic map of Africa, effectively making the nation the “Ichiban” under the African sun.

The brand treats its releases as historical correspondence. Its debut collection, “From 1966 with Love” was conceived as a 60-year message sent from the year of Botswana’s independence to the present. The release functions as an archive piece, even integrating the text of the 1966 Botswana Independence Act to educate inquisitive young minds while providing a striking aesthetic value. Following this release, the brand is preparing to launch a highly anticipated collection titled “Flowers”.

Now, what does the Future of Iky Look like?

Mikey envisions the brand evolving through three distinct eras. Currently, in the “Early Iky” stage, the focus is on mastering the visual aesthetic and making things look incredible. By 2036, the “Mature Iky” phase will establish the brand as recognizable “architecture for taste”, identifiable not by logos, but by its underlying creative philosophy. Looking 50 years ahead, the “Late Iky” stage will focus on longevity – preserving the brand’s signature feeling and passing it down to live forever.

Ultimately, The Art of Iky is deeply collaborative effort meant to galvanize and foster creative growth within the design landscape. By relying on genuine human connection rather than solely using artificial intelligence, the brand hopes to bridge the gaps in our collective cultural memory, proving that while Ai is a powerful too, it will never replace the spark of lived human culture, thus The Art of Iky ultimately translates to the unapologetic exercise of Human Intuition.
